During the “Most Precious Message” era it was said —
God does not make bargains with men (humans) because He knows that they cannot keep their end of the deal.
The history of the world, and in particular the history of His two chosen, denominated people, is absolute proof of this statement. One well known example will illustrate this point clearly —
And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord. Exodus 19:8
And then a few days later —
And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the Lord. And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. Exodus 32:1-6
The holy covenant that they had made with God was broken already, demonstrated physically by Moses when he came down from the mountain and “cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.”
So it has always been, and so it will continue to be in this world, until Christ comes the second time to put an end to these impotent promises which have been referred to as being “like ropes of sand”. SC 47; MH 174
In our own dealings with humanity we have all experienced the bitter disappointments of people promising something and then not keeping their word. This is what it is like for God all of the time.
After the final negotiations with US government officials ended in failure and disappointment, Chief Joseph, of the Nez Perce Indian tribe put it this way —
“It makes my heart sick when I remember all the good words and all the broken promises…I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever.”
All of these types of experiences are why Christ had to come and demonstrate to the world how we can live and keep our word to Him and to others. It is called the New Covenant; which was only the old one that was made with Abraham, but had been disregarded for a human version of “doing” it.
But Jesus did not commit Himself unto them, because He knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for He knew what was in man. John 2:24,25
If we are not absolutely depending on Christ for every thought, word, deed and place to go we will get caught in this trap of humanity again and someone will give us the stimuli that will cause us to react immediately and revert back to our old ways once more. This is not necessary, for Christ can and will give us eternal victories over every one of our sins and weaknesses.
Let us all allow Him, from this moment on, to abide in us so that we will keep our word to Him and to others.
